How to read a VIN

Positions 1–3 — WMI

World Manufacturer Identifier. Tells you who built the car and where. JN1 = Nissan (Japan), JT2 = Toyota (Japan), KNA = Kia (Korea).

Positions 4–9 — VDS

Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes the model series, body style, engine type, and restraint system. Position 9 is the check digit.

Position 10 — Model Year

Single character that encodes the model year. L = 1990, Y = 2000, 1 = 2001, A = 2010, L = 2020.

Position 11 — Plant

Identifies the assembly plant where the vehicle was built. Each manufacturer assigns their own plant codes.

Positions 12–17 — Serial

Unique production serial number for that specific vehicle at that plant. Usually starts at 100001 for each model.

Position 9 — Check Digit

A mathematical calculation based on the other 16 characters. Used to detect invalid or tampered VINs. We validate this automatically.
